The Anatomy of a Fragrance
Every perfume is composed of three layers of scent, known as notes. Understanding these notes helps you make informed choices when selecting fragrances.
Top Notes (Head Notes)
These are the first scents you smell when applying a fragrance. They evaporate quickly, lasting about 5-15 minutes. Common top notes include:
- Citrus (bergamot, lemon, orange)
- Light fruits (berries, apple)
- Fresh herbs (mint, basil)
- Aquatic elements
Heart Notes (Middle Notes)
The heart notes emerge once the top notes fade, forming the core character of the fragrance. They last for hours and include:
- Floral notes (rose, jasmine, lily)
- Spices (cinnamon, cardamom)
- Fruity notes (peach, pear)
Base Notes
Base notes provide depth and longevity to the fragrance. They emerge fully after 30 minutes and can last for hours:
- Woods (sandalwood, cedar, oud)
- Musk and amber
- Vanilla and tonka bean
- Leather and tobacco
